Fighting the Freeze: Winterkill and Spring Dead Spot Management Strategies

Tuesday, February 4
1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Registration Required

This seminar isn't your typical lecture. We're bringing the energy of a live podcast straight to the classroom. Think of it as a radio show where attendees guide the conversation. We will focus on managing winter-related challenges in warm-season turfgrass, specifically winterkill and spring dead spot disease. Experts in winterkill management, spring dead spot management, and cold tolerance breeding will engage in an interactive discussion with an experienced golf course superintendent/director of agronomy. Audience participation is encouraged, and the session will be structured like a live podcast. Key topics include:

1) Causes of winterkill such as desiccation, cold temperatures, and freezes, and effective scouting methods.

2) Preventative strategies like irrigation, wetting agents, fertility management, and optimal mowing practices.

3) Cultural and chemical management approaches for spring dead spot.

4) Advances in breeding cold-tolerant and spring dead-resistant/tolerant warm-season turfgrasses.
