Matteo Serena, Ph.D.

As senior manager of irrigation research and services, Matteo Serena, Ph.D., is an important part of the USGA Green Section research team. He’s working and engaging with golf courses, public and industry scientists, allied golf associations, and other stakeholders to advance water conservation on golf courses throughout the U.S. Serena has over a decade of experience researching turfgrass irrigation and water conservation strategies. A native of Italy, he earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Padua. He then earned his Ph.D. from New Mexico State University, where he continued as a research assistant professor until joining the University of California-Riverside, where he was responsible for the water and salinity management program for turfgrass in California. Serena is based in Southern California.
