John C Sorochan, Ph.D.

John C. Sorochan, Ph.D., is a professor and distinguished scientist at the University of Tennessee. He earned his bachelors, masters and Ph.D. at Michigan State University. Sorochan’s research focuses on cool- and warm-season putting green stress physiology and management and his university appointment includes 40% teaching and 60% research. Sorochan’s excellence in the turfgrass industry has been well-documented through the numerous awards he has received, including the Outstanding Advisor Award and the W.F. & Gold Moss Outstanding Teaching Award, both from the University of Tennessee CASNR, the Turfgrass Professional of the Year from the Tennessee Turfgrass Association and The William H. Daniel Founders Award from the Sports Turf Managers Association of America. In addition to participation in many state and regional turfgrass conferences around the U.S., Sorochan has lectured internationally on golf course shade, mowing and rolling, and plant growth. He has been a GCSAA faculty member since 2011 and he enjoys watching hockey and spending time with his wife and two sons in his spare time.
