(1356-01) The ability of turfgrass roots to extract water and nutrients depends on biophysical interactions in the rhizosphere – the thin (≤ 1-3 mm) region immediately surrounding roots. Understanding, predicting, and engineering the structure and function of the rhizosphere can let you harness plant and soil microbe interactions which can result in improving soil and plant health and surface playability conditions. Soil can remain wettable, while the rhizosphere becomes hydrophobic, compromising water movement, inhibiting nutrient mineralization and availability. In this seminar, researchers review recent discoveries to help you better manage irrigation water inputs with “real world” turf management practices.
